| | (#479) I've noticed some entries on this great website from WV military people serving over in Iraq/Afghanistan, and want to take this opportunity to thank them and convey how proud, supportive, and respectful I am for these people in harm's way. Retired from the Navy with 22 years, and now continueing to sail for the gov. as a merchant mariner, I understand the hardships and danger involved. Godspeed to you patriots, and a safe and well-earned homecoming.

The little things about back home Being in the military over 10 years it seems like it is impossible to make it back especially from Iraq. Well make sure you save me some for when I do get back. I’m going to get my share some day. I also love trying to tell people about ramps it makes a long conversation I would love to be able to get some of my Army buddies back there to try them some day. (#467) I was born in Richwood in 1949, delivered by Dr. Ed Echols who also did the same for my father, aunt and three uncles. My grandmother, Grace Hobart (later Kirby) lost her husband when my father Ken was 15 or so. My grandfather was the first Game Warden killed in the line of duty in WV. My grandmother proceeded to raise her 5 children, later taking in 14 foster children and providing for them by giving piano lessons, bookkeeping and for a while ran the old cinema. Gracie "bought me shoes when I had no shoes" and taught me the depth and eternal example of selfless love and goodness. She changed many lives for the better and never had an ill word toward anyone. Bruce Hobart Richmond, VA - Friday, March 04, 2005 at 00:14:05 (EST)
(#466) Larry Ward I just was looking at the pictures of the Richwood policeman taken in front of the Hobby Shop in Richwood. That's my Dad, JW. Also my Father and Mother are both dead. My Brothers name was Jim and my Father was Frank Nethken and Mother was Christine Carpenter Nethken. I had two cousins that lived on southside Marie Carpenter now deceased and Bobby Carpenter also deceased. I remember Richwood when the Stores were opened until 8 or Fri. and Sat. Nights. I would like to be able to hear from any that I lived near and grew up with. The Adams family lived next door to us. And Granny Case lived on the other side and across the street lived The Jacksons. I also grew up with the Cottrels Betty, Nancy and Mary Jane their was another Sister but I don't recall her name. Would also like to hear from Nancy Lavy and her brother Bow is who we called him I think his name was Frank. His parents were Frank and Virginia Lavy and she taught me in school on southside. Hope to hear from any who knew me. Julia Nethken Trescott Richwood, WV - Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at 21:23:37 (EST)

Graduated RHS in '70, worked at Ravenswood, Jackson County, WV. for 2 years and then went to the navy. Now I work at Century Aluminum near Ravenswood. Still have family in Richwood. If anyone sees jelly bean tell her I will be home next month to dig RAMPS. C. WHITNEY Cottageville, Jackson County ,WV 25239 - Sunday, February 20, 2005 at 09:40:32 (EST)
(#456) It is a highly valued tradition to go to the woods in the early spring and dig a mess of ramps thats what our great grandmother said.... I am asking for some help in planning our family West Virginia trip.... We are planning a week long trip in April 22 for four and like to know if any resturants in Richwood or surrounding area might have Ramps on the Menu: We are looking for a cabin, cottage or Motels in Richwood or nearby. We are totally unfamiliar with the area so any help or suggestions will be appreciated. What other activities are there available in Richwood? We appreciate any detailed information you could give us from first hand experience. Glenda and Edward Belcher edward970 lycos.com Houston, TX - Friday, February 18, 2005 at 15:33:27 (EST)

(#446) Hey Lumberjacks: Terrific site really well done. I guess each and everyone of us who attended or partially attended Richwood High ( no matter what year it was) has his or her own special memories to tell.... for me it was those 5 years, 1959-1964 that brings back the most memories. Barbara C. Lewisburg, WV - Tuesday, February 08, 2005 at 09:37:39 (EST)

(#444) It's always great to drop by and read the entries here. Are there any Bennetts left in Richwood? My grandmother was Minnie Myrl Bennett Carr. She was born in Richwood in 1900 and grew up there. Her brothers Roy and Harper spent all of their lives there. Ken Perkins Caldwell, Ohio - Saturday, February 05, 2005 at 10:30:43 (EST)
(#441) Hello I accidentally found this site. I was born in Richwood in 1937, moved to St. Albans while in the 5th grade, then to Florida in 1956, then back to W VA in 2000. Richwood is a very unique little town and when I visit there it is like going back 'in time,' I do attend the Cherry River Festival and family reunion at that time whenever I can. I noticed there were two people with familiar last names -- Hanna and Frame. My grandparents used to live next door to the Frames on Main Street and one of my best friends was Carolyn Hanna who lived in Milltown. I've often wondered what happened to her? Is there anyone out there who was in the drum and bugle corp. I was a majorette when Marchetta Strange was Head Majorette. Judy Scott Depot, WV - Thursday, February 03, 2005 at 11:31:53 (EST)

(#437) Just want to start by saying, "This is a BEAUTIFUL site!" My grandfather used to be the Constable years ago in this beautiful town, my father was born and raised there. I am so jealous of those who have had the chance to grow up in this down home town. I was fortunate enough to visit almost every spring/summer while growing up myself. They say home is where the heart is... I think my real home is in RICHWOOD!!! ( also interested in date of 2005 Ramp Feed and anyone who may have known my Grandfather... Herman L. Shaffer. ) Kim Shaffer Petroleum, WV - Thursday, January 27, 2005 at 11:12:39 (EST)
(#436) Just checking in to see if the date has been set for this year's Ramp Festival. A coworker is interested in doing some digging. He also wants to know where he can buy a "ramp hoe". (#433) I think this site is cool! I thought it was a joke that my father, Ronald McClung, told me he was born in the McClung hospital and was delivered by Dr. McClung. My family grew up in Summersville, but I have been to Richwood once, it was a beautiful town. My grandfather was Warren Gail McClung and his father was John McClung. I used to go to a big family reunion in WV every year but haven't been in awhile. I love seeing all the McClung history because, unfortunately I don't get to see that name much in the hills of KY. amcclung caldwell.k12.ky.us Aaron McClung Princeton, Kentucky - Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at 13:54:13 (EST)

(#426) Just wanna say thank, enjoyed your pics of Richwood. I've spent alot of time there myself over the years. As a teenager my friends & I would spend every summer living like hippies, those days are long gone, but seeing your pics bring back great memories, I know every spot you photographed so I has been fun for me to see. The 60s & Richwood will always be my home, I think, and in that sense I'll always be sort of a refugee in time. So in closing again I thank you sincerely. (#424) What a great website! I graduated RHS in 1974. Played the trombone in the band. I was transplanted from up the Opal Road on Muddlety Creek to Richwood in 1966 and boy, did I miss the farm...for a while. One thing that really amazes me about little ol' Richwood is the people I've met in my travels of the years that have family there or have been there. Something about it sticks with you and I'm very thankful to be able to call it "home." Richwooders that are at least my age probably recall that we played all over town, even in the mill yard and usually until dark at least. If the weather was decent there was a "sandlot" game of some kind going on and you didn't want to sit in the house watching T.V. Nintendo, Atari, Playstation and Game Cube -- What's that? Where else could you take your fishing pole to high school and catch trout at lunchtime? "stock truck!" was the cry that rang out in the halls of rhs signifying it was time to go fishing. then there was the movies, the bowling alley, the news stand. 3 operating soda fountains on main street and my children don't even know what a "malted milkshake" tastes like. we were family. we were a community! Anthony (Tony) Barnett Craigsville, WV - Tuesday, January 04, 2005 at 12:15:01 (EST)
(#423) My father died when I was 2, His name was Richard Brady.
