(#966) Love to read about my home town I lived there 1945 till 1959 Linda. Linda Browning <rashelter yahoo.com> Princewick, WV USA - Friday, July 03, 2009 at 03:30:54 (CDT) (#965) #848 To answer your question regarding the train car, I have lived in Richwood almost 51 years. I remember the train. The depot was refurbished with grant money and still exists. Only wanted to ride that train. Seems like it was B&O? Could be mistaken, but there was definitely a train. The tracks were removed and it is a walking track. Ginny Bailey Robinson <ginny_robinson hotmail.com> Richwood, WV USA - Thursday, July 02, 2009 at 21:49:41 (CDT)

Judy Hensley Bunting Flag Pond, TN USA - Sunday, June 07, 2009 at 07:31:10 (CDT) (#952) Hi 67 grad Steve Marlowe lived on Front Street remember Freddy Webb, Scrappy Keener, Bud Hampton, Kenny Carden, Carlie Bill Reed & Diane, Jane Odell. Great Times at the swinging Bridge. Sandy Haga, Sandy King, Joe Gwinn, The Shoulders, Don Furr & Weggie, Carl Hosey, Mike Marshall. All those memories, something they haven’t figured out how to text yet. Maybe if they put a dam up S. Fork Richwood will shine again. The 50`s & 60`s were a special time in a special place. The drive- ins, the dances at the grill, the bowling alley, and the newsstand. We were luckier than we ever realized. Good kids growing up in a great place. The place is wonderful but, without people it is just another place. It made us but in turn we also made it. Maybe the greatest thing is the fact we complimented each other. Everywhere I have been, people say how special West Virginians are. I feel this is true for the most part, but I also feel that Nicholas County people are special West Virginians. You take something pretty darn good with you where ever you travel. I am glad I got to be part of it. May God be good to all of you, and may all your roads be smooth {although dirt ones are good too}. I graduated from RHS in 1958, and worked at the Northern Hotel. I used to observe Bato Crites loafing on Oakford Ave. as I walked to and from school. He was an interesting character who chewed snuff, whittled wood, and dug ramps in spring. He lived on one of the ridges above Richwood. Once he told me he was the meanest man on earth. He said "Where I come from the dogs are so scared of me that they won't come out at night". Jim Wiblin <jimwiblin windstream.net> Newark, OH. USA - Monday, May 25, 2009 at 22:52:49 (CDT) (#945) To T. He is the brother of my Aunt Winifred Hicks Smith's husband, who lives in Vienna, WV. I understand that Bob's health is not good at all, maybe dementia, so I hear, but not confirmed. So, I doubt he'll be involved with the Cherry River Festival this year. He was always so active and always at the dances they held during the Festival too. Cynthia Wilson Cole <wilson_cynthia yahoo.com> Sarasota, Fl USA - Monday, May 18, 2009 at 19:43:38 (CDT) (#935) Antoinette Hewlett: Richwood does have a 'ramp festival,' but I'm not sure when it is. I was born in Richwood and do remember hearing about the ramps and there was a man they called 'Bato Crites," who carried a bag of them on his back and dug for ramps quite often. I remember seeing him. My grandmother wouldn't cook the ramps because of the strong odor, so I never ate or smelled them. Also, I believe Jim Comstock who owned the "Newsleader" was the one who added the ramp juice to the ink for the Newsletter. That was quite an event when that happened! In fact, I was the first African-American graduate of Richwood High School. My sister Lois later graduated there also. A couple of nights ago I had a meal at a gourmet restaurant in San Francisco which had ramps as part of the entree dish, and of course I had to order it for that reason. I have not had ramps since I left Richwood and have fond memories of the entire town smelling like ramps because the newspaper was printed with ink which had ramp juice added one week during the spring. I look forward to coming back for a visit sometime soon, and in the meantime I will have to find a place to buy ramps! Antoinette Payne Hewlett <PayneHewlett aol.com> Oakland, CA. I am glad I bought the big historical picture book there last year. It has been a great reference to go down memory lane. Bruce Seabolt <seaboltb yahoo.com> Ocean Springs, MS USA - Sunday, May 10, 2009 at 12:51:51 (CDT) (#924) Richwood... I can't imagine a childhood anywhere else. I spent my youth riding the bike my dad purchased at the Western Auto, it was a purple huffy, with a banana seat and white basket on the front and I was 10. I spent summer days at the Chestnut Hole, the Falls, Church picnics at Woodbine and I agree that is the coldest water I have ever been in! Richwood has changed and the changes are sad when they are so negative, but the important things haven't changed... The Church still has Father's Day Picnic at Woodbine (and water's just as cold!); the Chestnut hole looks the same now as it did then... The big mill's, North Bend is still the greatest place to grab your lunch and go sit and eat... It's still safe to stroll down the street and you will always see a familiar face... it's still a great place to raise those kids and a great place for the grandkids to visit... my grandson loves to come to RICHWOOD and says when he is five he is going to live here... now how cute is that... I love my memories of Richwood of growing up; I looked forward to visiting it when I lived away... Richwood will always be more than a place to all those who lived here... it will forever be our "hometown"... Debbie <houstons_maw yahoo.com> Richwood, WV. Sonya Chapman <ceaaj verizon.net> Craigsville, WV USA - Thursday, May 07, 2009 at 19:59:30 (CDT) (#922) OMG, Guest 921, you have my memories! I haven't lived in WV since 1984 and I was just searching the web to find a road that goes up from Riverside Drive but you end up in Greenbrier county (when I was 7 we called it Greenbrier Mountain Road) When I was small, my family lived on Riverside Dr., My sister and I went to Tannery, when I was in the 5th grade we moved to Ronceverte but, we always stayed close to the Collin's family and, until I was 18 we would go back to the CRN festival as many times as we could. I remember a band practice in their basement, Randy played the drums, his sister Cathy, my sister, and I were thick as thieves during festival time, I have been to the Falls, to Woodbine, <=coldest waters I have ever been in! And have many fond memories of time spent at a resturant as you go up the hill out of town. Since I've been back in WV, I heard of the hard times Richwood is having and that's sad, but my Richwood is a treasure and I'll hold that memory always. Sue Couch <rify verizon.net> Ronceverte, WV USA - Thursday, May 07, 2009 at 08:36:31 (CDT) (#921) What a great sight. I’ve seen names I haven't heard of in years. Don Furr, I lived on Southside and I use to come to your house and bug you for guitar lessons. I played in a rock band with Mark Marshall, Randy Lester, and Chester Carden called the Outer Limits. Randy Smith played with the Dukes with Bill Daily at the American Legion. I honestly miss those times along with fishing and swimming at the various swimming holes in South Fork, the Willow hole, the Chestnut hole, Woodbine and the Falls. I try to get back to Richwood during the Cherry River Navy Festival. I find it very relaxing to come back and visit regardless of what shape the city is in. my wife makes fun of me for driving around the town about 100 times and she gets to hear all the stories each year. My mother loved Richwood and all she spoke about was getting back there to live. Sadly my mom, Joann Angius passed away on December 2, 2008. She was 75 and still had Richwood very much alive in her. We had gangs in Richwood, Jimmy Marlow, Curtis Louden, the Whitney's, Freddie Hampton, Randy Lester, and Randy Collins. In closing I hope to get down for this years festival. My wife and I own several businesses and sometimes it’s hard to get away but we have reservations at the Four Seasons. Hope to see you soon. You are correct, thank you! I was told by telephone that the ramp dinner at Jenkins Church, Mathias, WV, is May 23rd. Last year the dinner was on May 17 (3rd Sat.) Don't know why the date keeps changing but doesn't seem to be the 1st Saturday as reported here. Glenn Huffman <huffmaga jmu.edu> Harrisonburg, VA. USA - Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 11:21:46 (CDT) (#910) In answer to #907, You're right...one won't find the city the way it use to be...most all the stores, no, all the old stores are closed and forgive me, other than two wonderful flower shops, one great jewelry store the rest of main street's stores are "junk" stores. You will still find the pool halls on Oakford, but long gone is the resturant that so many enjoyed... But what you can still find in this little town that we all grew up in, is peace and quiet... a sense of well being at still being able to stroll down town after your evening meal, being able to sit on your porch and enjoy fresh air and the sounds of your neighbors mowing their yard. You can pick up your fishing pole on your way out the back door and hit one of the forks of the Cherry and fish. Oh heavens yes, the town may have changed in many ways, but in the important ways it will never change. Yes, economy has forced changes in Richwood in many way over the last 30 years, but it's still home to those who understand that the things we hold close to heart and what truly makes this Richwood, isn't a store front... it's heart. God bless the good folks of Richwood and all the many who in heart will always call it home.

My house sits up on the hill across the road, I can see the river behind the house on the lower road, but I can hear it like it was just beyond the front porch. How wonderful to live in a area where you can safely open the windows and enjoy the peace of mornings the way nature in tented one to indeed start a day with such a relaxing sense of being. Can anyone name all the swimming holes around Richwood? I remember The Willow Hole, Snake Hole, The Bucket Hole and Slant Rock. Some of these maybe different names for the same spot. USA - Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 21:18:17 (CDT) (#875) The 15th. Annual SouthSide reunion is scheduled for June 6th, 2009, at the Richwood Middle School cafeteria. It is a covered dish dinner with turkey, ham, silverware and drinks provided. There will be an auction to raise money for next year’s reunion. If you have anything that you would like to donate to the reunion for the auction, please bring it with you. Last year we auctioned off a cane, (walking stick) to the highest bidder to be the keeper of the cane for a year, so again we will auction it off. The beautiful cane was donated by Doug Ward of Greenbrier road in Richwood. Two bugles and a set of bells donated by the Artrip family will be up for auction. They are instruments that were used in the Drum and Bugle corp., Dayton Artrip was the director. There is plenty of parking, plenty of door prizes, so come and meet old friends and new ones. If you have any suggestions or ideas that may help, please feel free to contact me at 304-846-6982. The doors will be open at 10am. Come early and enjoy the day with friends and neighbors. Judy Hicks Peters <MsReddra55 aol.com> Scott Depot, WV USA - Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 08:31:57 (CDT) (#873) I received this article from my son Philip and he asked me to submit it to the Richwood Guestbook. To everyone from Richwood....My Grandparents (Thomas and Bea Hicks) and my Mom (Judy Hicks Peters) are from Richwood. Their family used to own a big bakery (owned by Tom Hicks, "Richwood Bakery") on Main Street (many decades ago) and also The old Hicks Gas Station (John Hicks was the owner) on Oakford Avenue. My great-grandfather Thomas Hicks was at one time the Sheriff of Nicholas County. Just a funny note here...He used to take the prisoners to his home for a home-cooked meal before carting them off to jail. My mom and dad used to take us to Richwood every summer as kids (back in the late 1960's and early 1970's). I remember it well. I remember a calm, beautiful, safe and happy place Richwood always was. It was an unchanged island of what America really is (or should be)....Hard working, ChurchCherry River at the family farm in Richwood. I have not been to it for years and years and am going to try to be there this August. I read some of the posts (These posts refer to another Forum that this article was posted on and not to the comments on the Richwooders Guestbook) on here about all of the negative unhappy people in Richwood. (To those of you that are unhappy, I can understand some of it. But...you should try living in Columbia, Missouri (where I now live) or Pensacola, Florida (Where I was born and raised). You think you guys have problems....Wow! You have no idea. Here people get shot or killed almost every day. Drug dealers in every neighborhood. Home Invasions are almost a daily occurrence. Car wrecks, Rapes, Robberies, GANG ACTIVITY...the list goes on and on. Here....people rarely know their neighbors, let alone even talk to them. While Richwood is not a perfect place (show me where perfect is and I'm moving there) it is far better than the big "so-called modern" cities. I would much rather raise a family in Richwood than some so-called bigger "better" place. What a joke. If you live in Richwood and think it is so terrible and there is no opportunity for you...then you really have a choice....move and make your life better for yourself...or stay, stop complaining and make your own daily life better by doing something about it besides getting drunk or doing drugs day after day. Doing so would make a better town for you and all of the people around you and for the entire town! People make their own choices and can mostly control their own destiny if they give it their best effort. A good job, or good friends and good neighbors are NOT gonna fall into your lap. You have to get up off your behind and make it happen. Be the first one to make a change. Watch how fast others around you will want to do the same! I won't allow anyone to ruin my idea of what Richwood stands for and my memories of it. It is where my family comes from. It is MY heritage! Richwood, West Virginia will always be a rare & unique piece of America. A treasure well hidden from those who don't deserve her. As far as I'm concerned Richwood would be a far better a place if it were kept a small hard working town with small town values. That is something you can all be proud of as Richwooders. It's rare and envied by people who don't have that. Why do you think Mayberry RFD (The Andy Griffith Show) is SO popular and has been for decades? Because people know that places like that (and Richwood) are fading away fast and can never be replaced. People all over the country secretly wish their town was like that. Don't ruin what is your right. Richwood is yours and you should make her proud and stand up and be counted. People just don't understand what they have...until it's gone. Don't let it happen....be Proud of yourselves and stop complaining. You are such lucky people to be a part of real history that is still very much alive and REAL. Please don't take what you have for granted. God Bless you... Sincerely, Philip Peters UNITED STATES AIR FORCE VETERAN 10 YEARS HONORABLE Judy Hicks Peters <MsReddra55 aol.com> Scott Depot, WV USA - Tuesday, April 07, 2009 at 21:04:06 (CDT) (#872) Just wanted to say, as so many have said, this sight is the place to come to when you're a little homesick for the mountains of West Virginia. I have been gone for a long while, but still have such happy memories of everything about the town of Richwood. There is no place like it. And while I here, just want to wish all who are reading A VERY BLESSED EASTER. This is great. Class of 1991 I am Kenny and Eula Carden’s oldest daughter. Granddaughter of the late John and Nellie Carden of Southside. Also granddaughter of the late Norman and Hattie (use to teach headstart) Brown of Hominy Falls. I have lost touch with most of the Carden side of the family since the death of my father back in 1993. I moved to Maryland in the fall following my father's death. I am hoping that some of my family will read this and attempt to get in touch with me or my sister Peggy who now lives in Sutton, WV. I also hope to reunite with some old friends as well. I still visit home often as my mother Eula still resides on Southside. Thank you for offering this site. It is a great place for everyone to catch up and get back in touch. Jack Collins, Bill Carden, Jim Fitzwater, the Seabolt brothers, etc., all the members of the unit, are in my fondest memories. (Sammy Frame was a member of the unit, too; good ole Sammy) The city of Richwood and its citizens were and are the very best people anyone could meet anywhere. (#839) It is time to start reminding people that the SouthSide Reunion is not too far away, June 6th, 2009 at the Richwood Middle School(formally the Richwood Grade School). It is going to be a covered dish dinner, with the committee furnishing the ham, turkey, drinks, and tableware. We are also going to have a auction to raise money for next years reunion. There is going to be lots of door prizes to be given away. It will be held in the cafeteria at the school so there is plenty of clean restrooms, and plenty of parking. We had 126 to register last year, and hopefully more this year. If you know of any of the kids we went to school with and can get in touch with them, please do, there is so many that I know we would love to see. My brother and I left the day before to find a safe place to be away from her. When we came back, all we found was a concrete slab and a lot of water. The house was no where to be seen. All that he and I had owned was now history. I lost my art studio and all of my material belongings. The pictures of my children, and my grand children. My brother had lost his wife in May just before the storm. Now he had lost his home and the memories that went with it. Pictures can show what it looked like, but they can not relay the pain and misery encompassed in those scenes. All that we have heard about Katrina has been about New Orleans. They were flooded, we were destroyed. This is in reference to the Katrina section of this web site. God bless Richwood and West Virginia. Especially interested in an invoice showing his studio name and costs, thanks Mark Mark Romano <mark imagesbyromano.com> Cowen, WV USA - Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 16:35:21 (CST) (#796)   Every now and then I check up on the Richwood Guestbook and enjoy reading everyone's memories. I do remember the Company Store, going there and checking out the 'candy bins," especially the licorice, the clothing on the counters in the middle of the store. Movies at the Star Theater and getting 10 cent boxes of the candy coated licorice out of the vending machine. Yes - I was definitely a 'licorice lover!" Roller skating from my Grandma Hicks' house on Main street all the way down to the Company Store and trying not to fall - made it most of the time. But, sometimes I didn't! Marching as a majorette with the Drum & Bugle Corp., especially performing at a High School Football game in a blizzard. I had to walk home and was nearly frozen by the time I arrived at my grandmothers on Main Street. Going to my Grandfather Hicks' bakery on Main street in the morning and picking up cinnamon rolls for breakfast. And as someone mentioned - those p'nut butter sundaes at Jergens Drug Store were out of this world. I have tried to duplicate the p'nut butter fudge topping and it's somewhat of a poor substitute. Also the chocolate coke or 'chocolate rickies" as they were called! I would take a quart jar to the drug store and they would 'fill it up!" I think of Richwood and there are so many wonderful nostalgic memories. We are blessed with so much now but those days were even more so. These are but a few of my memories of my childhood in Richwood. I don't believe there is anywhere on earth that is like it. Have a Merry Christmas and may 2009 be a "Blessed Year" for all of you. I guess it was the Wal-Mart of the past. We all looked forward to going and making suggestions as to our Christmas presents. Those days are long gone now the kids want it all and the parents trample people to get it. Maybe we all need to go back and live like the good old days. Neighbor helping neighbor and not depend on the government or others. We need to look out for each other this holiday season. Bob Hanna <bobandcheri verizon.net> Wadsworth, Ohio USA - Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 07:59:29 (CST) (#791)   I remember Toy Land under the old News Stand... the company Store was before my time but I remember the stories Mom and Dad shared about it... I remember GC Murphy... how wonderful I thought that store was... to go down stairs and see all those toys...and the Candy and fresh popcorn...Then there was the Western Auto...Dietz's and Spencer's was the only place mom bought our shoes...and going to the corner drug for a peanut butter sundae... I remember how busy the city streets were during the Christmas season, actually having to squeeze through the crowd to get from store to store...how wonderful as a girl to sit at the old Main Street Restaurant, the table right at the window and watch the people going up and down the sidewalk... It's hard to believe sometimes that those days are long gone... But, like I was telling Mom today, (my mom lives with me)... that every special memory we have...it's a picture in the heart that no one can ever take away and one we can view whenever we want too... I reminder her how important it is to keep in touch with those we love, to spend and enjoy their company and make heart pictures that we can relive when we can no longer make the "pictures"... So to all I hope everyone a wonderful Merry Christmas and may you all make many heart pictures to treasure for years to come... Earlier I put a picture of the names after they were disrespected by throwing them in a hole and covering them up. The picture is #701 with many of the names. I have asked the city hall to see if they could recreate the memorial of the soldiers from our town and they said they would try. I thank them for looking in to re-creating another one. We are a lumber town... so have examples of things pertaining to that way of life and the hardships those Lumberjacks faced... maybe have set up an old logging camp with the era of dress and food and cooking...etc... as for music... Bluegrass sound like the music we should be hearing... guess when I think of heritage I think of the stories my dad told me of his days as a boy in the old logging camp his dad Bossed and mom cooked... I'd love to see story tellers sharing the history of Richwood... maybe someone making apple butter... someone set up their quilting frame and allow others to work on it as they pass by... guess everyone has their own idea I reckon...anyway... I am sure it will be a wonderful event and Maxine always does a great job on all she sets out to do. (1) The Best way to fight the spammers is to use a disposable email address and keep your primary address for family and friends....... Asked your family and friends to use the disposable address for e-cards, chain letters and so forth...... when you get to many junk mail just get a new disposable address.. (2) Don't respond to span in any way and don't open any span message....... (3) Don't buy a product advertised with span.. (4) Spammers will send out emails using other names and email address of a popular sites as a cover!!!! So Beware of email that don't look right. At richwooders.com we don't send out any spam or email. So delete is the best actions.. What I don't understand is why people don't follow instructions on the guestbook sign page .... Reading instructions can also save you time and help to stop the spammers. (#735)  Hello richwood how is everything going? I've been living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland for 22 years and love it here. We operate at a much slower pace compared to the western shores (Baltimore and DC suburbs). Classmate Norma Mullens and I exchanged emails recently and discovered that we both turn 60 within two days of each other in August, so we're going to get together for a celebratory (or comissory) dinner sometime around then. I get back to Richwood about once a year, as my mother and brother still live there. I'd be anxious to hear from any classmates who might be checking in to this guestbook. Many thanks to the person or persons to maintain this site. Gary Cumberledge <garyjanc peoplepc.com> Federalsburg, Md USA - Sunday, July 06, 2008 at 13:40:26 (CDT) (#683) Hi again: I just finished visiting the guestbook entries. What memories this brought back! Saw entry from Britt Nicholas. Any relation to Brett? My mom's maiden name was Nicholas Also saw entry from Regina Matthews. My Mom and family James & Lily Nicholas lived in front of the old Coke Ovens in Saxman. I spent a lot of time with my Grandmother Nicholas in the summers. She walked every day down the road to get a bucket of drinking water from a cistern that was built in the side of the mountains. Now that was water that should be bottled. Her house was the only one left in front of the Coke Ovens in the 60's. My Dad Leonard Roach worked there and watched this young tall skinny girl on the porch across the road every day (My Mom Naoma Nicholas (Roach). Also saw entry from Virginia Frame any relation to Roger Frame? He is one of our managers at Wal-Mart in Vienna where I work. He lives in Ripley, WV and drives to Parkersburg and Vienna area to work. He used to work for the Wal-Mart store in Summersville. I grew up on Fenwick Mountain and went to school at No Hope for New Hope. I played on our ball team and we use to travel to Fenwick Grade to play. That was always their saying for us. We showed them. Best days of my life! Went to school with Jackie Jones, Debra Bennett, Pam Taylor, Ricky Bennett, Bradford Garrett, Mike Hanna and one more boy but can't recall his name? We moved to town in '68 and lived at 4 Elm St. My sister Sandy (Roach) Rexroad still lives at 2 1/2 Elm st. Sorry for writing a book but it was fun finding this sight. I have gone to school in Parkersburg and work here. There are a lot of people that I have met over the last 37 years that were born or lived in Richwood area. Charlotte Roach Hickman <chrltthickman yahoo.com> Parkersburg, WV USA - Friday, July 04, 2008 at 07:36:36 (CDT) (#681) I am still trying. Can someone in Richwood help me? I am writing my autobiography and I have written too many people in Richwood trying to find out why the billboard with the soldiers from Richwood was torn down after the Second World War. I want to honor my writings by having a picture of the billboard with the names in my writings. It stood on the Big Mill property during the 40s and I have received some information from some of the good people of Richwood and I thank them for their help. I was told by one person that the billboard was for that time only and was not supposed to be a permeant memorial. I hope the people that made the decision to remove it did not feel the soldiers at that time deserved a permeant memorial like the Beirut Memorial in North Carolina. I do not believe the Second World War Veterans were more important than the others because the Richwood Soldiers and their families have given so much to our country. They deserve more than they have received. I wrote to the Mayor of Richwood, asking him if he could help me find or knew anyone that could help. My request fell on deaf ears and blind eyes and will wind up like the soldiers names that were on the billboard many years ago, in a hole covered with dirt. If the good people of Richwood don’t start using their heads it will wind up the same way and that is sad for me. It deserves more. How sad to see Richwood going down as it is...The closing of the hospital breaks all our hearts, but then just driving down main street breaks mine. Those of us who remember what it was finds it so hard to accept what it has become. Sad to is the fact with the economy the way it is it won't get better any time soon. It's not an easy choice, but one so many of us have to make, when we decide that it's best to close a chapter of your life and move on. I put the For Sale Signs in my yard today, with mixed emotions, One... ready to start a new life with my partner Larry and enjoy the new home we built in Greenbrier County, second, remember the excitement of building my new house here in Richwood just 10 years ago. My choice is made, and I shall always have the memories of what Richwood use to be and what it will always mean to me. My For SALE Sign is just one of many I see in yards through out town... no matter the reasons for them, it's still sad to see so many of us leaving "home. On a better note... Larry's band, ROARIN' CREEK BLUEGRASS was practicing here at the house Sunday afternoon, when to my surprise and delight my sister Lou Russell of Craigsville stopped by with none other than her son, Fred "Gene, Skip" Russell Jr. and his beautiful wife Barbara and their three beautiful teenage children! Josh, Mike and Beth who are all musically talented kids, (but only played classical until Sunday) in from Grand Forks North Dakota. The kids jumped in with the band, Beth on the "fiddle" the boys on guitars and me on the upright bass! What a good time we had!! My beautiful grandson Houston was visiting for the weekend and we all just had a good old fashioned time! Fred remarked on the changes in town, yet said it's so nice to have it to come back and visit. Well just wanted to share with so many who tell me they read on here to catch the latest news...so that's mine... Wow you sure are going back a long time now. Well after moving to Lexington, Ky in "74" I began playing in a band 3 nights a week which was pretty interesting in itself. Being in Lexington let me meet and do quite a few things like play with Troy Gentry before he was anything and although I didn't get to meet Eddie Montgomery I did play a few songs with John Michael. I guess one of the funnest things I did was to do a show with Shep Wolley of Hee Haw. He was up in years at the time but it was still a hoot. I did bring back a couple of bands for home coming and played at Marshalls which was also a great time. I've been in Scott Depot a couple of years now and just started playing again but only about once every three weekends or so. That's not what I want to do but until I find another band that will have to do I guess. Anyway that's about it CP hope this finds you doing well as always. I could go on and on about Richwood and how much I love it but most everyone already has. I can't say enough about Mr. Pratt and the opportunities he gave me. (#655) Date: Mon, May 19, 2008 6:13 pm Our Richwood Back on Track Committee has worked hard over the past year to raise money to convert Richwood's Track and Field at Dean Memorial Field into a real, 6-lane, regulation rubberized running track and make necessary repairs to our football field. Currently we have raised approximately $318,000 and are only $27,000 short of our goal of $350,000. (In spite of over $35,000 in volunteer labor and materials, the price of oil inflated our overall costs as well.) We are in the process of rebuilding the track and need your help in generating the additional $20,000 to complete this project. The Nicholas County Board of Education has matched the dollar amount they gave to NCHS and we have turned to businesses and private individuals for aid in acquiring the rest. If interested, please go to our school website: http://rhs.nich.k12.wv.us and click on Back on Track. Mary Jane Williams RHS Teacher

Their names were proudly displayed on a billboard in Richwood for all to see, but the sad part is their names were thrown in a hole and covered with dirt. For me this is sad and disrespectful. Some of them gave their all for our country and this is what they got. I knew some of them and I am sure there are people in Richwood that remembers all or most of them. A few years ago my wife and I were in Jacksonville North Carolina and our daughter Glenna, a former Marine took us to see the Beirut Memorial. When I saw the names, of our Marines that were killed the big lump of hurt came up in my throat but the happy part is, their names will always be there for all to see and not wind up like the names of the Richwood soldiers. When I look at the picture of the names of the brave men who served in the Second World War I am sad because this is all that’s left of them. I ask my self this question. Why were their names disrespected and thrown in a lonely hole in the ground? Now we cannot show our respect or show them to our children as we walked by. In my sorrow I think of them. I hope my hometown of Richwood doesn’t suffer the same fate as the names these people we loved and served our country so well. While we were in Richwood, I wanted to see my old hometown one more time. As I looked down Main Street, I felt sad because the street of a once thriving town was almost deserted. Is there someone I could write to and tell how disappointed I am about the way our soldiers’ names were treated from Richwood after they served our country. Until then I will keep trying. When I went to RHS (in the late 50's), I tried out for the band....I lasted only one practice....I wanted to play the trombone...well, I just couldn't get the hang of what to do....Mr. Pratt took me aside and explained since I was left handed I would not be able to play this instrument...evidently they were made for righty's.. Betty Cornell Barker <betty.jim starpower.net> Leesburg, VA USA - Friday, April 18, 2008 at 20:09:38 (CDT) (#635) I am another former Richwooder who wishes to express appreciation for the influence Mr. Pratt had in my life. An early memory I have of him was when he procured prints of famous paintings, which he put around the band room walls (his gallery). I was one student of the many grade school classes who enjoyed his guided tour of the paintings. I later became a member of the Richwood High School band (1961-65) where I came under his sphere of influence again. I believe Mr. Pratt came to us from a different world than the one we lived in, and I am thankful he took the time and effort to share his broader perspective. He cared individually about his students. He cared who we dated. He cared how we behaved. He instilled values and guided our appreciation for things good and worthwhile. He enriched our lives in so many ways, and I believe he became an integral part of who most of us who knew him are today. Our memories of him have not faded, and Mr. Pratt’s legacy lives on within his former students. I send my condolences to the family. You shared a more intimate relationship with a great man who will be greatly missed by many. I played the bells in band and some of my fondest memories are trips to away games, the Elkins parade and all the silly songs we sang along the way. The band, in our 1964-1965 year (I think) traveled to the Luray Caverns, Mt. Vernon, Washington, DC (Kennedy's Grave in Arlington as well), and Mr. Pratt patiently explained what we were seeing. We also went to a theater and saw "My Fair Lady." Mr. Pratt was kind and always fair to everyone. On many occasions over the years we corresponded. I was so pleased to learn that Pratt Park, just behind where I was raised on Riverside Drive, was so named to honor him. The world has lost a wonderful person and I'm certain I, as well as many others whose lives he touch, will miss him! Gary Cumberledge <garyjanc peoplepc.com> Federalsburg, MD. USA - Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at 15:37:27 (CDT) (#632) Richwood’s most beloved citizen passes away at 97 Pat Hanna Register-Herald Regional Editor
He was, without question, Richwood’s most beloved citizen, a man who gave his heart and soul to a town and its high school and never asked for anything in return, a gentleman who touched thousands of lives and never forgot a face or name.
Edwin B. Pratt, whose face and voice were synonymous with Richwood High School for more than 70 years, long after he retired as the school’s band director, died Tuesday. He was 97.
I’m kind of at a loss for words, former Richwood basketball star and 1968 Olympic gold medalist Mike Barrett said from his home in Nashville, Tenn. Mr. Pratt was always, always doing whatever he needed to do to promote Richwood High School, the band, the athletic department, just Richwood in general. He’s one of those people you just can’t replace. I have the utmost respect for what he did with the band, mostly for what he did for Richwood. He was just so much into the fabric of the city.
He will be sorely missed. He was absolutely as much a part of Richwood’s athletic history as anyone. Hopefully we can all come together and pay tribute to him.
Another former Richwood basketball star, Jay Hewitt, recalled how Mr. Pratt, then in his late 80s, remained a daily fixture at the school, updating bulletin boards and the message sign in front of the school and encouraging the players.
He was always so nice to me, Hewitt said. I saw him last summer at an alumni game and he told me he enjoyed watching our team play (in the late 1990s). He meant a lot to us. He was good to us all. He was good to everybody. He was an amazing man.
Mr. Pratt was highly visible and always in a coat and tie as band director and as public address announcer for RHS football and basketball games. In fact, he announced at basketball games as recently as this past season. He also announced at Little League baseball games, played the piano at the annual Past 80 Party and other functions, dressed as Santa Claus in the town’s annual Christmas parade and helped his wife Madaline at a nursery school at a Richwood church.
And he was involved in a lot of things many people didn’t know about, like taking flowers to local cemeteries, said retired Richwood insurance agent Maria Dooley, who played in the RHS band under Mr. Pratt in the late 1960s. He did so many things in such a quiet way.
You’ll never find another man who was more humble, retired Richwood businessman Frank Dawson added. He wanted to give; he didn’t want to receive. He was a great man. I don’t think he ever said ‘no’ to anybody. There will never be another one like him.
I remember back in the early ’70s when this fellow in Richwood who everyone knew as ‘Little Joe’ died. Mr. Pratt and I were both pallbearers, and someone came up and asked him if I was his son. And he said ‘Yes.’ Ever since then, I called him ‘Dad’ and he called me ‘Son.’
A native New Englander who remained a life-long Boston Red Sox fan, Mr. Pratt came to RHS prior to World War II. He then served in the Navy during the war and returned to Richwood, where he continued to teach band, music appreciation and glee club for 45 years altogether before retiring in the early 1970s.
In late 1999, Mr. Pratt was voted Richwood’s Person of the Century in a poll conducted by the Richwood News & Record, a publication of Beckley Newspapers.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Carol Zimmerman of New Hampshire, two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Richwood.

Hi Kenneth, The Jaguar once found in Arizona, California, Florida, New Mexico, and Texas, this cat was hunted to extinction here in the United States in late 1940's but it is found in Central America and Mexico so I say it's "possible" but unlikely. I’ve got several stories that are far different from the experience that I remember about the big cat..... we need to find some references or sources, a news article from an old reliable newspaper would be a good one. My father, Ray Wyant, was the minister at the Cottle Church of God and taught at Richwood High School in the 1960's. We moved in 1971 at the end of my fifth grade year so I never got to attend RHS. I often wonder whatever happened to all the friends I had at Craigsville Grade School. If you remember me from grade school, contact me. I'd love to hear from you. I really miss the WV mountains. It was late summer, (2006) around 7 in the evening, and we were on the side deck eating watermelon, watching the girl accross the road walk her lab dog, when I notice in the woods what I thought at first glance was a deer. I watched a second then realized this wasn't a deer and it was watching the girl and dog! Well it moved, I seen it was a cat and scream for the girl to get her dog in the house, she thought I had lost my mind but thank heavens she did what I screamed for her to do and ran to the house... this cat got up and started walking toward my drive, Larry couldn't believe his eyes and I said no house cat is that big at that distance! Then.. Lo' and behold the thing crossed right beside my drive and up the hill not 15 yards from where we sat on the deck and it was beyond a doubt a cougar. I never seen shoulders move like that on a big cat in person nor a tail so long! ... scared me to death but was fascinating too!... We told a few who didn't really believe us and when I told my other neighbor Dolly, she said yep, she had seen the thing at the woods edge between our yard. So no doubt about it... Mountain Lions cross our area if not living in this area!... On another note... Carlene and Sandy and all the others who have e-mailed me, I sent more pictures in to this site hope they are posted soon and hope you enjoy them! Ya'll have a happy March... and speaking of lions... in like a lamb...out like a lion!... And to those who make this site possible...THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! Debbie Bond <houstons_maw yahoo.com> (#594) Hello. I grew up in Richwood. I lived at 75 Riverside Drive which was near the city park. Some may remember my grand father, Patrick Mays. Everyone know him as Pat. He had gotten his back broken in three places working in the coal mines sometime in the 1950's. I was the boy that pushed him and his wheelchair to Main Street in Richwood. I had a great time playing at the city park and going to the swimming pool in the 1970s. I left Richwood in 1976 to join the Marines for 5 years. In 1984, I joined the West Virginia National in Richwood. I miss Richwood. So many of us have the same wonderful memories of this place...Cherry River Festival, Milltown Grade School, swimming at the Chestnut Hole, Willow Hole and Secret Hole, sunbathing at the falls, fishing the south and north forks of Cherry, picnics at North Bend, and the wonderful times we all had at Woodbine! I would love to see a Johnstown/Southside Reunion, I think all can remember the old swinging bridge, under that little old bridge alot of us played, those who can remember may recall the Bucket Hole, the place where the smaller kids took a dip in the Cherry, being to young to go to the bigger swimming holes on up river. I would love to hear from Kathy Hinkle. Lost touch with her more years ago than I care to remember! And Danny Martin. He spent all his youthful summers here. Richwood isn't what it was in those days, lands sake I remember how good the hotdogs were at Main Street Resturant, and Gale's was known for their great chili. So much of my time was spent at the News Stand, Granny was behind the counter and lands those fountain cokes were great! And the corner drugstore, that wonderful and famous peanutbutter topping they put on sundays, yep, things aren't what they use to be but thank goodness we can take that stroll down memory lane when we start feeling homesick for how it was way back when.... Have you camped alone up in a hollow and listened to the creek and the critters? Have you ever heard the voices of those long past whispered on the wind that flows through the hills and the hollows? Have you ever listened to the mountains? Have you ever felt the heartaches? Have you ever shared the tears? Have you ever boiled with pride? Have you understood the emptiness when you left? Have you ever listened to the mountains? After being away for many years. Did your heart sink? Did your eyes fill with tears when you saw the changes of home and knew it would never be the same again? Have you ever listened to the mountains? Have you stood on the street of a once thriving town that is now almost dead and heard the Church bells of long past and the music and laughter of weddings, parties and dances of times long gone flowing through the hills and hollows? Have you ever listened to the mountains? Did you realize those times are long past? Did you have the feeling that no one else one earth feels the way we do about where we grew up? I grew up in Richwood and left there to move to St. Albans in the 50s, then on to Pensacola, Fl in later years, but I am back in WV now. Whenever I visit Richwood I get 'goosebumps," Although it has changed greatly it is still so unique and it's like stepping back into a 'time tunnel." I spent many Sunday afternoons picnicing with the Hicks Family at the "Farm" on Cherry River and Cranberry. What wonderful memories! Many people will remember the Richwood Bakery which my grandfather Tom Hicks owned. I was a majorette with the Drum & Bugle Corp, another beautiful memory. It has changed somewhat but is still "Richwood." Many great memories of Richwood, RHS, friends, family, football, parades, basketball, crusin' town on Friday nights and main street would be backed up! Hard to believe now, but being there and seeing alot of people during festivals & other times helps me revisit those great times! It makes you appreciate your childhood and the closeness of the community we had growing up. Everyone lucky enough to attend, have fun, those of us not lucky enough, remember the good times.
