I have thoroughly enjoyed your site. As the webmaster for the Richwood High School web page, I have added a link to your site from our page. Please feel free to add our school web address to your site. Also, concerned citizens of Richwood are putting together a rally on January 7 to bring attention to the need for a dam on the South Fork of the Cherry River. With your permission, we would like to use the pictures that were posted on your site in a power point presentation to demonstrate the great need for a dam.

My dad is from Richwood so for me there is not a time in my life I can remember a place as great as this. I would also love to see it more. Now that my family told me about this I will be able to see it more. Thanks

Wondering when the Ramp Feed is in 2004. Several of us Richwooders living in Ohio want to come down for it. Also, did the Fire Department meet their goal for Chrismas gifts and contributions.

Haven't been back to Richwood for a number of years, but always consider it 'home territory' to this country boy from Hominy Falls! Still live in south-central Michigan, but going to winter in Florida and South Carolina this year since I'm now retired. Our two adult children both live in the Atlanta, GA. area. Hope to get back to town for the 1964 '40th' reunion in 2004 sometime! Let me know when and where it is!

Hello! I lived in Richwood from 1956 - 1959 and absolutly loved it. We moved when I was six. Our house was at 119 Front Street next door to Jr. Turner's store. I'll never forget my friends from then. I'd like to see them again. If anyone knows where Billy Jenkins is or Scrappy Keener let me know. The last time I was in Richwood other than passing through, was for Clyde O'Dell's wake. Is Gladys still living? I think it was two years ago I came to the Southside Reunion and didn't know a soul. The ramp caserole was well worth the trip!

Enjoyed this site so much. My husband (John) and I both graduated from RHS, and attended Milltown. Donnie, (my Mother-in-law) is still on Spruce St., and we've got many lifelong friends still in Richwood. Heartfelt regret to all still effected by recent flooding.

I can only imagine the devastation of the November, 2003 flood. However, the pictures were so very good--like I was stepping in the water! Have family ties to Richwood, Carrie and Stu Brown, and the Stockwells were my aunt and uncle. Have been to Richwood many times in my life and I was just heartsick to see all that water flooding everywhere. Calhoun County had high water at that time, too, and many people had to leave their homes. However, I think the water there was more destructive. Hopefully people can get their lives back together and may God Bless.

The pictures of the flood made my heart heavy......I remember so well the '54 flood. I have many pictures of that flood taken by my father who was the owner and editor of the Nicholas Republican newspaper. I remember watching Dr. Bill McClung dive into the rough waters from the atop of Hewitt Motors, to swim to the hospital across the street, in order to deliver a baby! I will never forget having to get those awful "shots" to prevent possible illnesses! I love Richwood and will always think of it as "home" no matter where I hang my hat. My only regret is that my children didn't have the pleasure of growing up in Richwood..... a town full of love and heart. Hello to all the wonderful friends from Richwood!

Great site! Loved all of the old pictures and recognizing many names from the guest book. My family owned and operated Prelaz's Restaurant - Best food ever! Would love to see pictures of it as Prelaz's and pre 1960 when it was called the Liberty Restaurant. Also would enjoy seeing pictures of the Rainbow Grill, Pics of Holy Family Grade School, the spring basketball games, and The News Stand. What a time. What a place!

A big South Carolina hello to all my friends in West Virginia! I was sad to see the pictures of the flooding, but I know we've been there before and we will recover. It was fun sharing some of the other pictures with my friends and co-workers here and describing the places. Although my husband, Brian, (who by the way is a Richwood High School graduate like myself) and I call South Carolina home we will always consider places like Richwood and our hometown Craigsville home too. Hope to see my friends again aound the Christmas holidays! If you read this, I send my love and hugs and kisses from Lauren and Grayson too! I miss you!

I'm so sorry to hear of the flood in Richwood. Every current Richwooder is in my thoughts and prayers. My mother works at the Nursing home in town and was concerned the state would close down the nursing home because of the flood. Anybody have any info on that? I haven't been able to get through to Richwood by phone since Thursday. Anyhow... I miss Richwood and can't wait to come for a visit.

I am so sorry it took the flood for me to visit your site. The pictures were very sad. My parents have pictures of a flood that took place in Richwood in the early 1900's and it looks just as devastating now as then. You have developed a wonderful site that I will visit often. I can go "home" now whenever I want.

Hi, I grew up in Richwood. One of the Bennett Girls from 'UP 'ROUND THE RIVER'. I've lived in Montana for 35 years, but have made it home almost every summer to enjoy the hills, and up round the river again. My younger sister, Linda, has moved back there, and at the moment is swinging a shovel to try to clear all the mud from the flood of this past week. (NOV 19, 2003) (Go Linda!) No matter where I live, Richwood will always be home, and I'm praying for you. - Phyllis

This is a reply to Julie Gertz of Ohio. Your grandfather and my father are first cousins. My aunt Edna says he was her favorite cousin. His mother, Aunt Lou, was a favorite among her nieces and nephews. I grew up hearing many wonderful stories about her. Her first marriage was to a Lucas who would have been his father. Her second marriage was to George Cutlip in Richwood. My grandmother, Maggie Shaver McCroskey, was her sister. We have lots of genealogy info that we have been gathering, please email. My family would love to hear from you.

This is for Julie Gertz in Ohio. Please email me. My father is a first cousin to your grandfather. My aunt who is now 95 says that was her favorite cousin and has many happy memories to relate. Lou Lucas and my grandmother were sisters. If you are interested in genealogy, we have lots of info for you. We have traced this side of the family back to Jamestown in 1607. Your great grandmother, Lou was a favorite among her nieces and nephews, we grew up hearing many wonderful stories about her.

Richwood is home to many of my family members. (I have probably visited the Richwood area every year of my life.) And even lived up Little Laurel Rd. as a young child, before moving to Ravenswood and then Warren, Ohio. I have never heard of a town that has so many reunions and home comings. Have you??? I think it's great!!! So until the next KEFFER REUNION or HART REUNION , I'm wishing everyone else a good time at your family reunion....WHERE ELSE...BUT IN RICHWOOD WEST VIRGINIA. See ya, Tammy

Hello Richwood, I am not sure if anyone will remember me, I lived in Richwood for a few years in the late 70's and attended RHS there for that period of time. I then moved back there again in the early 90's for about a year. I found your site, and started remembering what it was like to live there. My mother was born and raised there, she was Mary Lee Meadows, related to Charles Meadows that was very well known when he was alive. If anyone remembers me or my mother, please email me and tell me what you remember, would love to touch base with old friends, and relatives that are still there. dfh24691bellsouth.net

Dear Richwooders, I recently visited your town looking for the death date of my great grandfather, Anton Boskovic. After speaking to various persons who were all extremely nice to me, I visited Holy Family church and the parish priest there located the information for me. Anton Boskovic had died on April 19, 1909. I enjoyed my two days visiting your town and meeting many wonderful and helpful persons. My great grandfather worked for Richwood Cherry River Boom and Lumber Company until his death. According to his death record he lived at Camp 34. I hope to return to Richwood in the spring, after the snow season has subsided, to try and locate that site. If anyone of you who are reading this message know where Camp 34 may be located please send me an e-mail message. Thank you all! Hvala lepa! I am a descendant of two Slovenian families Sutej and Boskovic, I know very little of the language but try to use the little that I do know. Betty Ann Murphey

Hello Hometowners! I posted once before but noticed it had been excluded. At any rate I would love to hear from anyone who graduated with me in 1985, anyone who remembers my parents Buck and Dean Hefner, and especially anyone who could tell me about the Hefner family. There's hardly any family left who remembers my Grandad Spurgeon ( I think ) "Sam' Hefner and I hardly know any of the elder Hefner's. I love this website.... "kudos" to those who have made it available. I also lived in Richwood during the 50's but didn't get to graduate with the class of '59.... we moved back to Charleston before my junior year.... I was heartbroken that I had to leave the best years of my life and some wonderful kids.... we had so much fun... we made our fun without drugs or booze... we danced our hearts out at the Rainbow Grill, we attended the football and basketball games, we went sleighriding day and night....I remember the flood of '54. I will never forget living there...I go back and go down memory lane.. I've been able to be in touch with a couple of former classmates from the other Richwood website and I cherish that so much, however, I would like to know if anyone out there would know Larry Curry (who lived in Fenwick) Ronnie Chambers, Sheila Greer. When we moved to Richwood we lived overtop the funeral home on Main Street, then we moved to Walnut Street (lived beside of Joel Lee Hicks) then moved on top of Oakford Avenue to the left. (I can't remember the name of the street off of Oakford) I didn't make the band (but I tried), didn't make it as a cheerleader, miss by one vote of being class president (forgot what year) but I did play basketball and was voted best all around player for two years and champion foul shooter for one year... I have a copy of the picture that was in the News Leader showing us getting our medals (which I still have)... Verdie Ransbarger was standing beside me. What great memories! Would love to hear from anyone from the class of '59. Love to everyone in Richwood.... by the way... when we lived there the population was around 5,000 (at least that's what we were told... my stepfather was the manager of the old McClung Hospital at that time)

I grew up in Richwood and it's a safe place to be. I only wish there were more things to do, but at least it's pretty safe and peaceful here. Come say hi to me sometime at Foodland (used to be Donaldson's) I'm the cashier girl...

Hello all you Richwood fans. I was born and raised in Richwood until age 11 when Dad moved us to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. been a long journey having lived all over the world and the U.S. since. But I am so pleased and proud to see this website. I so appreciate it and the pride I feel for my hometown is phenomenal. I hope anyone who is interested in talking old times e-mails me. I was born in 1951 at the McClung Hospital and attended Tannery for 5 years. Thanks for the memories. Jeri Bentley

Hi Richwooders, past, present and future. I so enjoy reading all the comments about Richwood and I totally agree it was in the 1950's the place to be. I graduated in 1957. Although I haven't been back in years, I still have a very special place in my heart for that beautiful town. Sometimes we leave for what we think is better, but it is not always necessarily so. My parents, Glen and Helen cornell lived in on Main Street until he retired from the mines in the 70's. I'll bet it is beginning to get beautiful there with fall colors, it is beautiful here in Northern Virginia also. To the ones to keep the page going, it is super, thanks.

What a nice way to go home when you can't really get there! I was born in Richwood and raised there for most of my life. I DO miss home but I was there during the 1993 blizzard and that's what keeps me in FL! I especially would like to get back in touch with my old friends I went to school with there. I graduated from RHS in 1985. Anyone who remembers me can get in touch with me at this e-mail address. I'd love to hear from anyone.

I have come across an unused box of clothes pins from the Stelle Wallace Corp, made under the ACME name. I was just wondering if you had any information on the factory in Richwood. Dates of operation ect. I'm just wondering how old my box of clothes pins are??? I will attach a picture. I do have it up on E-bay under vintage clothes pins, or Acme clothes pins. Item number # 2561471114 on E-bay.

So many people have been asking about the WVAR radio station. I live right beside the station and the information given to me by one of the stations 1/3 owner is that, they filed with the FCC for silent time off the air, to give them time to rebuild their tower that was taken down by the ice storm we had in Feb. That person also told me that, they only have until Feb, of 2004 to get the tower up and running or they lose their licensing from the FCC.

Love the site and this town!!!. For those of you wondering about WVAR radio. Their radio tower collapsed during the ice storm back in Feb. knocking them off the air. As far as I know, a new tower has not been built. The owners had applied for permission from the fcc on 4/16/03 (2 months after the fact)to be silent for 6 months. This gives the station owner time to erect a new tower. According to my calculations 6 months is up in September. We lost our local paper again, are we going to lose our radio station? I hope WVAR is back on soon.

Today I found your website, and I could not pull myself away. Seeing some of the old pictures brought back many memories, and also raised questions. My Grandparents, Arthur and Elizabeth [Sparks] Bailey, and their two grown children, moved to Richwood from the community of Persinger in 1938. They bought the house at 63 East Cranberry Street. One of the children was my Mother. Her name was Manella, but her nickname was Nellie, or Nell. The other child was Mom's older brother, Earl "Hickory" Bailey. Mom worked at the Pin Mill during the 40's (the world’s largest clothes pin factory), so the picture of Clothes Pin Factory Workers on your website drew my attention. I wish I knew when that picture was taken, but by the looks of it, it very well could have been in the 40's, while Mom worked there. I wish I could zoom in on some of those faces. Perhaps someone knows who they are. My fondest memories of Richwood are when Mom, Dad, and I traveled out there from Milwaukee during summer vacations in the 50's to visit Uncle Earl. Those were the best of times. The town seemd so alive and vibrant in those days. The whistle at the Big Mill really got your attention. When trains were leaving town, you knew it! The sounds echoed for miles around. I spent some time in Richwood during the late 50's and early 60's. I went to school at Milltown during that time. Clyde Marsh was the Principal then. Miss Hollingsworth taught 3rd grade, Mrs Booher fourth, and Miss Boso (I think that was her name) 5th. My Mom passed away January 19th 1960. She is buried at Mt View Memorial Park on Hinkle Mountain. My Uncle Earl passed away in 1987. I scattered his ashes at a place on Hinkle Mountain known to me as the Hickory Flats. An avid hunter, it's a place Uncle Earl often went to exercise his dogs. There is a shooting range there where we often went for target practicing. Thanks for the [good] memories, Richwood!

Just wanted to say hi to everyone which I am not sure who most of you are. Richwood is still a great place to visit and I try to come back every so often, especially in the fall to see the leaves there. I really miss that place sometimes and it has so many memories for me even though it wasn't that long ago I was living there and graduating (1994). Oh well, time flies and I love the town I live in now! My wife and I both have attended Marshall University and are doing very well. We do plan on living in WV (Huntington) for the rest of our lives provided there is work. We really love this state and have really grown an appreciation for it as we get a little older. I am super pumped for football season as the Thundering Herd continue their dominance and will march on to another exciting season!! GO HERD!! Take Care!!!

To Ny NY the name of the restaurant attached to the Northern Hotel was called The Northern Restaurant. My mother Sally Hosey ran it from about 1958 to 1965. She then moved to the Oakford Restaurant and ran it several years for Mr. Baber. I remember the Northern Restaurant especially the old jukebox, I remember the year Rick Nelson came out with the song Hello Mary Lou, my mother had a waitress by the name of Mary Lou, and that song was played over and over, man what a song. My mom always had the best french fries, and hamburgers of any place in town at the time. I remember when Richwood was a place where you didn't have to worry about your kids, locking your door, or you car. Most kids had two or three mothers, and fathers. I know i had my mother and father and several of the neighbors claimed me as their son. as did my mother and father claimed other kids in the neighborhood. I love going back to Richwood, and go back as much as possible.

Greetings: I have many fond memories of Richwood. My uncle Mark Neal had a grocery store there for years. He had the coldest pop I ever drank. I lived at Charmco but we often visited Richwood. The band festivals at the Armory were a blast. Mark's wife Helen was a great lady. However, I did not like it when she insisted on calling me Frederick.

I was very happy to see the picture of the Ritzy Rae. My Mom, Thelma Cottrell was the owner in the fifties. She made the best hot dogs! I remember Stafford Starcher and John"Montana" McClure helped her when she needed assistance with anything. Happy memories.

To NY NY I mother Sally Hosey operated the restaurant by the Northern Hotel in the early sixties up until not just sure when she gave it up. I know I worked there in the sixties but guess I never knew what the name was. I think we just called it the Old Northern Restaurant. Don't remember any big guy or a Indian woman.

I was thrilled to learn of the Richwood website and enjoyed reading all the comments. Growing up on Riverside Drive, attending Tannery Grade School, and Richwood High School was such a fun time. Going home for lunch or walking in a row to the old gyn basement to eat lunch is a fond memory. Also what about those grade school basketball tournaments! What fun we had! Attending Richwood High School was such fun. All the teachers were wonderful! I remember some of the boys would not behave in Mrs. Woodyard's class one day and she said it was a blackboard jungle. I remember the time Mr. Dean came down to our room and grabbed one of the boys and held him up against the blackboard until he apologized for his behavior? As a retired school teacher, I wish we had a lot more Mr. Dean's out there today! Another memory I have is when a group of us girls united to protest the fact that we could not wear blue jeans to school but the boys could. We marched into Mr. Dean's office and demanded that we be allowed to wear them. (we were early women libbers--go girls!!) He refushed, so we did it anyway. After our protest, he finally gave in and allowed us to wear them on Fridays only. Those were the days!

Answers to some questions? Joe, Beckley, WV. -- The theatre was the Auditorium not the Alpine and yes many a movie drown out because of the fire trucks. Daniel, Ft. Worth, Texas - -Jim Wolverton is a retired judge and lives in Summersville. Reddie, Albq., NM. -- Who could forget the Rainbow Grill. Dom and Agnes Girondo (spelling?) owned the place. My mother graduated RHS in 1943 and she grew up at the Grill. I graduated in 1963 (40th Reunion next week-end) and I grew up there. We ate lunch there at noon when we went to the high school. Dom and Agnes made us toe the line when we were there or you were made to leave. To bad the teens of Richwood don't have a Rainbow Grill. By the way it is now a church. Former Richwooder, NY., NY. -- The hotel you are talking about was the Northern but I don't remember the name of the resturant. When the hotel shut down so did the resturant. It late was a Recruiting Station for the USMC and other branches of the service. Richwood of the 40's, 50's,& 60's was just the perfect place to children to grow up. We created our own fun and we did it without drugs or boozes. Oh how I miss those days!

Those were great pictures. I ate a few times at the Ritzy with the few pennies that my folks gave me for lunch. Between what my cousin had in his pocket and I had in mine we'd buy a hot dog and a coke and then split everything down the middle. That's why I was so thin in High School we had coupe (black Chevrolet, I think) like the ones in the picture. They do take me back to younger years although the town does not look so bright and cheerful as I remember it. The old pics tend to make things look darker than they are. The building to the left of the Star Theater, about three-four stores down was the firehouse and it had a movie theater above it also. The Star, however, was a real luxury movie house... plus seats, beautiful lobby and etc, -- at least that is what it felt like to us who had never been out of Richwood before. Two ladies (can't remember their names now) who live next to us down on Riverside Drive worked in the store (one name was Lena, I think) and would give comic books that were to be thrown away. In those days, the top half of the cover was cut off and returned to the publishers while the store could get rid of the comics as they saw fit, just could not sell them. I also remember that the five and dime had oiled wooden floors. Great store, one of the biggest in town. Somewhere on that street further to the left of the firehouse, I believe, was small little men's store where I bought my first suit, grey. Thanks for sharing. Brings back a lot of memories. You're doing a real service for us Richwooders'

Aboustly love it! I have a triva Question though. What ever happened to the resturant that was next to the hotel that was on Main Street. Around the time frame of mid to late 60's. A mother & daughter ran it together. Daughter was married to a big man there in Richwood & his mother was Indian or at least thats what he said. I will be back to find the answer to this historical Richwood question. Keep up the good work!

Trout fishing memories on the Cherry River, I fished around the Cherry River in 1993. Did you know The Cherry River begins as two streams, the North Fork Cherry River and the South Fork of Cherry River, each begin in Pocahontas County and flows west-northwestwardly across northern Greenbrier County before converging in Nicholas County at the City of Richwood. The water weren't but a little more than knee to hip deep and between 20 to 60 feet across in most areas, and we went ramp hunting up the hill side and I might add that it was extremely good ramp hunting too. Nothing like catching a few trout, stuffing them full of ramps and butter, wrapping them in foil (seal the top and side edges} and griddle them directly over hot coals or you can brush the fish with butter or make your own marinade. Cook about 4 inch from hot coals 5 minutes. Turn; brush with butter or marinade, cook 5 minutes longer. Fish is done when it flakes easily with fork. I'm not too sure if you would like the ramps but I think their nothing better for seasoned good trout and I like the off aromas that can add to the flavor. We left Richwood with some super fishing memories, and newly formed life-long friendships.

Lived in Richwood circa 1966-67, on Dain Street, we think it was. (It was the main road through town, next to the river & the railroad. Our house was 46 steps up from Dain Street, painted pink, you couldn't miss it. Rented it from the Henry Hitt family, who lived next door & who had a grocery across the road.) Our son was born March 20, 1966, in (then) Sacred Heart Hospital in Richwood. We had a 2 1/2-yr. old daughter, too, at the time. We were members of Richwood Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Harold Keesee was minister then. We'll see if we can dig up some photos. More later. Greetings, Ted & Jane Kaufmann (7/21/03) P.S.: We hear about West Viginia and Richwood names now and then & some expatriate West Virginians living here in Buford, Georgia

Our family moved to Richwood in 1972 from Wyoming County. My fondest memories are when I was Cherry River Festival Queen in 1975. I met so many wonderful people and had so much fun. I guess that was when I really realized what the people of Richwood were really like, wonderful people and lifelong friends. I just wish things could be like they used to. I miss it! I am also trying to get some information for my brother Jerry Mullins. Jerry graduated in 1978 and is trying to find out if his class is going to have a 25 year reunion. If anyone has any information about this I would appreciate it very much if you would let me know as soon as possible. Jerry lives in Baltimore and would like to attend if they are going to have one. I live in Summersville now and would love to hear from some of my friends. Email me sometime!

Tannery was my first school.... and graduated High School in 1956. Played the tuba in the band and worked as a "soda jerk" at the Richwood Newstand after the football games. Here are a few of the reasons why I love Richwood and my W. Va. mountains. The miles of beautiful roadways and natural scenery and the Cranberry Back Country and Cranberry Wilderness areas which is black bear country, also a lot of deer in the area and heard of mountain lions being in the area just have never seen one. And miles of unmarked trails, (the area is part of a black bear sanctuary) and I love watching those black bear and deers.

I made a lot of good friends there and have only happy memories of the town and people. I still love to go for homecoming when I can. Keep up the good work.

Although I am on the west coast now, I can still smell the ramps and fried potatoes at the various ramp festivals come April and May. I miss the small town atmosphere and the wonderful people there.

Good to see a site for ole Richwood! Graduated in 68 from RHS! Reading over the other messages on here! I remember the bands and all the dances! Nothing like good music and fun following a Friday night ballgame at the Legion or Armory! Richwood is where I owned my first GTO! I also would love for somebody out there to submit more pictures. All of mine were lost! Take care!

Just found this wonderful site! Hello to all back home! Would love to see some pictures of the late 60's and maybe 70's of Richwood and RHS! Graduated in 69! Some of the best times of my life were in Richwood when things were really on the move there! Viva la ramp!

I have signed the first Richwood register saying that I bet I was the oldest to sign in. I'm 82.6. Someone asked when did I go on the point system. I enjoy hearing from students and friends in Richwood. The Charlottle Observer ran a whole page on Richwood and the Ramp Festival. The town is getting on the map and people know it's in West Virgina.

I'm so glad the web page is back. I too will always think of Richwood as home. I graduated from RHS in 1957. The 50's was a good time to grow up in Richwood. I haven't been back in years, but with this site, it a way to visit without the trip.

I just discovered the Richwooders Guestbook and it is great. I spent my early childhood in Milltown on Cherry Street while attending Milltown Elementary School thru the 6th grade. My father worked for the ol Milltown Lumber Co. Unfortunately we moved as I entered the 7th grade. I have returned several times to Richwood and I realize my dream of returning upon retirement in a short few years. It is a place found only in WV... peaceful and wonderful and warm neighbors. Keep up the good work with the Richwooders guestbook.
